If you’ve had a chance to tune into the last few episodes of the CampHacker Podcast, you’ll have heard that on Episode 88, we had intended to talk about debriefing your day at camp with everyone, but as most great camp conversations go, we ran out of time to cover it all! We hit a ton of great points about debriefing the day with campers, but we didn’t want to rush through the staff community part of this discussion.

That bring us to now.

This episode of the Podcast is dedicated to help our staff members get the most out of their daily, weekly, and seasonal experiences at camp. Whereas we usually delegate the camper’s nightly devotions to the counsellors (Ep. 88 has some ideas on how you can be that person too), we, as directors need to present our staff teams with those same types of opportunities.

There are a ton of different ways to facilitate this (again - grab your notebooks for this episode) but largely you can think about staff debriefing as either coming directly from you (“can I talk to you for a second?” conversations) or through facilitating large group debriefs (great moments in camping) or maybe a bit of both. As well, the type of debriefs that we facilitate for our staff can fall into two categories, intrapersonal (gratitude journaling) or interpersonal (wellness/prayer partners) or again, maybe both.

With the list of ideas that you’re surely going to have from this episode, we hope that you feel inspired to shake up your staff meetings and make time to facilitate those conversations that inspire your staff to get thinking.

Mind the (generation) Gap!

Before we get started, this isn’t going to be one of those podcasts about generations where we put people into their age characteristic boxes.

This episode is about everybody.

From your youngest counsellor, to your oldest staff member (you?), every camp-player has a ton in common; above all, the ability to serve camp, and grow through that service. If we start there, then they mysterious perceived power of the “generation gap” kind of fizzles.

It’s not to say that the spread of age and experience on site doesn’t make things tricky, but we all know that camp relies on a generational turnover to not just survive, but thrive.

As directors, it’s our job to reach our staff on a common ground.

That means you don’t get to say “I’m too old for this” anymore.

For example, Dan came up with these 5 awesome statements that are the perfect example of a “top-down” conversation that shows empathy for the age-gap between you and your staff:

3. Explain why we need you - you bring this quality

5. How do you like to be communicated with? Can you adapt to these 1 or 2 things?

One of the key practices in adventure and experiential programming is debriefing. The goal of debriefing an experience is to maximize the potential for reflection and a transfer of learning for your participants.

In short, helping people get the most out of something they did or felt in the day.

If we do it after a team-building initiative or a session on the high-ropes, why not do it at the end of the day?

We should.

The camp day is full of transformative moments; sometimes, there’s almost too many to keep track of. By prompting some mindfulness at the end of the day with your campers, it gives them the chance to unpack all of their conversations, moments of growth and feelings and go to bed thinking meaningful thoughts.

The Power of the Big Trip - CampHacker #87

Big Trips Mean Big Growth

For most of us, we know that a canoe trip is one of the quintessential ways for kids to connect with nature, challenge themselves and build a special kind of camaraderie with their trip-mates. That being said, when most of us think about canoe trips, we`re thinking 5 days, maybe 7 or even 14.

What happens when you up the stakes and "turn the dial to 11" and start talking about the long-haul trips? 20 days, 40 days, entire summer trips with air-drops, train rides and crossing national borders!

Oh yeah.

This episode of the CampHacker podcast is dedicated to these kinds of big trips and the camps that have them down to a science. Travis is joined by 3 Directors whose camps specialize in these epic excursions. These 4 Camp Pros put their heads together to discuss not just the logistics of these trips (which are super interesting!), but the transformative power that comes from campers and staff immersing themselves into nature for weeks at a time. What emerges from these conversations is that the long trips may be logistically tricky and definitely more expensive when you factor in flying in food and long distance pick-ups, but the pay off in the experience and growth is more than worth it.

For the campers, they get a genuine experience of autonomy as they gain confidence and move from a passive participant to an active player in their, and their peer's experience. For staff, it`s a chance to role model and build relationships in a way that simply isn`t possible on site or on a week on the river.

These things take time - and there`s no better place to take that time than on the water and the trails.
