If you've been tuning in to the last two episodes of the podcast, you'll know that we're talking all about full time work at camp. So far we've covered, asking yourself if camp is right for you as well as making your full time camp job a sustainable one. This episode, we wrap up the mini-series with an entire episode dedicated to how to find not only a full-time camp job, but the right full-time camp job.

CampHackers Dan, Joe, Gab and Travis all put their heads together to share their experiences and their best advice on where to look, how to apply and some insider tips and tricks on getting your foot in the door.

It turns out that the road to full time work is much more broad than you'd think. Yes, you can look on the OCA, ACA, YMCA and every other acronym'd job board and send out an email, but is that really what's going to set you apart? If you find that you're spinning your wheels just spitting out resumes and cover letters, then this episode is definitely for you.

Welcome back to the podcast and welcome to episode 2 of the "Is camp right for me?" mini-series. Last episode, we covered the personal questions that someone should ask themselves before considering a life in camp. You can find that episode here.

This week, CampHacker Travis is joined by camp pros Marc Cooper from Camp Tamarack and Topher Aderhold from Camp Gray. Travis, Marc and Topher put on their thinking caps to share their secrets for what it takes to not only survive in the full-time camp world, but thrive in it. From balancing your camp and personal life, to your every day demeanour during the summer, this episode covers a lot of ground!

After all, working at camp means that more often than not, it's up to you and you alone to figure things out. It's an hour before a group comes and you've sprung a huge leak, the staff are dragging their butts and you haven't had the chance to talk to your significant other who lives off site in a couple of days! Sound familiar? These kinds of things can, and most likely will happen, but, by being proactive, keeping a cool head and a set of keen "director's eyes", things will be just fine.

We hope the tips and stories here will be perfect for not only those thinking of joining the industry, but full time veterans as well.

Hello friends and welcome back to another season of the CampHacker Podcast. In the spirit of starting something new, we wanted to dedicate today's show and few more this season to those who are considering pursuing camp into a full-time commitment. As well, we'll be talking to you directing veterans out there who's job it is to begin the process of mentoring the next generation of camping professionals.

This week, we get the conversation going with CampHackers Dan, Joe, Gab and Travis to scratch the surface of what it takes and the kinds of questions that the budding full-time camp professional needs to start thinking about. Any camp person can tell you that camp isn't a job, it's a lifestyle, but what happens when you choose to make a camp-job, your life's work?

A big aspect of being in full-time camp work is the ability to take the time for some self reflection. So why not start practicing with some of the questions that came up on today's show? Grab your journal, a cup of coffee (or tea if you're using Travis' tool of the week) and start pondering.

Reflective questions for a future creator of camp magic:

  • What do you want from this job? To be a full-time programmer, director, or both?
  • What are you going to do when you get there? Follow what's in place, or cultivate your vision?
  • Do you love to learn? (The answer should be yes)
  • Are you interested in the business side of things?
  • Is your family or home life ready for your camp life?

These are big - no - huge questions. This list isn't meant to intimidate, but just like you'd expect from your seasonal staff, your heart needs to be in the right place, before you can start to lead other's.

Joe’s 10 point scale:

  1. Initiative - does the individual show the ability to start task on their own, lead things on their own etc.

  2. Independence - can they work by themselves and be successful?    

  3. Problem Solving - are they able to solve problems when they arise?    

  4. Communication - do they communicate well with campers, other staff members and supervisors?    

  5. Ability to work in a team - when needed can they work in a team and be a positive contribution to camps success    

  6. Adaptability - can they go with the flow as things change and different needs arise?    

  7. Compassion - do they show the ability to feel others emotions and help with any issues?    

  8. Leadership - can they lead? Do they lead? Are they a good leader?    

  9. Passion for what camp is - Do they have passion and show that passion in their actions and words    

  10. Willingness to do that needs to be done
